VERONA — Augusta County Public Schools are almost ready to harness the power of the sun.

Secure Futures LLC of Staunton hired Sun Tribe Solar of Charlottesville and Standard Solar Inc. of Rockville, Maryland, to install solar panels on seven of the county’s 16 schools.

“We’re very proud to note that once completed Augusta County Schools will be the largest public school system in this state using solar energy,” said Augusta County Public School Superintendent Dr. Eric W. Bond at the school board’s regular meeting earlier this month.

Bond said that Fort Defiance High School switched to solar on Wednesday. Hugh K. Cassell Elementary School will switch over on Friday, Clymore Elementary School on Dec. 28, Wilson Middle School on Feb. 4, Wilson Elementary School on Feb. 11, Riverheads High School on March 11 and Riverheads Elementary School on March 18.

Scheduled dates could be affected by weather in the coming months.

The cost to go solar will pay for itself, Bond said.

“It cost us a couple thousand dollars to do a feasibility study,” Bond said, “but the reward and the benefit and the revenue that we’ll gain from the solar panels certainly outweighs that and pays for itself over and over and over, over the next 20 years.”
