MONTEZUMA — The Bridgewater Reds outslugged Stuarts Draft, 22-18, on Tuesday night in a Rockingham County Baseball League game featuring a combined 10 home runs, five by each team.
The Diamondbacks jumped out a quick lead when Tanner Morris belted a solo homer in the top of the first inning. The lead didn’t last long as Bridgewater exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. For good. Tanner Moyers put the Reds ahead with a two-run double in the second and Jonathan Sexton hit a grand slam homer, making the score 8-1. George Laase made it back-to-back jacks as his solo shot made it 9-1.
The Diamondbacks battled back the entire game, but were unable to overcame the big early deficit.
A two-run homer by Terrell Thompson in the top of the third pulled Draft to within 9-3, but a run-scoring single by Mason Mitchell and a sacrifice fly by Sexton pushed the Reds’ lead to 11-3 after three complete innings.
The Diamondbacks tallied six times in the fourth to trail 11-9. Kent Rookilin belted a three-run homer and Morris added a two-run shot, his second round-tripper of the game, as the visitors edged closer.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kyle Eagle’s two-run double highlighted a four-run inning as Bridgewater maintained the upper hand, 15-9.
Will Haas hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to pull the Dbacks back to within four runs, 15-11, but the Reds answered with three runs on Dylan Horne’s three-run homer to right in the bottom half of the inning, pushing the Bridgewater lead to 18-11.
After Draft scored twice in the top of the sixth, the Reds cancelled those runs out with back-to-back solo homers from Jacob Grabeel and Michael Fyvie to keep what looked to be a comfortable 20-13 lead.
Draft wasn’t finished as a two-run double in the seventh by Rooklin and three more runs in the top of the eighth shaved Bridgewater’s lead to just two runs, 20-18. The Reds then added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to close out the 22-18 victory. The game ended after the eighth inning due to the league’s three-hour time limit.
Rooklin was 4-for-6 in the game with a double, home run and five RBIs. Morris was 4-for-6 with a pair of homers and four runs batted in. Haas finished with a 3-for-5 night at the plate that included a double and a home run. Jack Pausic and Cody Bartley each added three base hits to Draft’s 22-hit total.
Stuarts Draft, now 3-16 on the season, returns to action Wednesday evening at the Diamond Club to host the Clover Hill Bucks.
